The National Theatre – A Not for Profit Organisation

The Australian National Memorial Theatre Limited is a Company limited by Guarantee and under its Memorandum and Articles of Association is prohibited from making any distributions to members.  Any profits made by the organisation must be used for the purposes and in the manner set out in the Memorandum and Articles of Association.

The National Theatre is classified by the Australian Taxation Office as a charitable institution and is authorized to maintain an “Arts Education and Training Fund” and a “School Building Fund”, donations to which are tax deductible.

The National Theatre was founded on December 5th 1935 by the late Gertrude E. Johnson OBE after her return from a successful career as a soprano in England. The principle was based upon a continuing tuition of young singers, dancers and actors to professional level and this has been implemented and continued to the present day with the Ballet (est. 1939) and Drama (est. 1936) Schools.

The objective of training students to a professional level was hampered over the years through the lack of a suitable theatre in which to stage productions. Training in the theatrical arts is not complete without the experience of actual performance and although commercial theatres were available for use by the schools they were expensive and for a number of other reasons, not entirely suitable for student productions. With the support of public donations and the State Government, the present National Theatre opened on 7th September 1974. The theatre and schools, however, has always been excluded from recurrent funding arrangements.

About the Ballet School

The National Theatre Ballet School provides training to a wide cross section of students drawn mainly from the Melbourne metropolitan area but also from interstate, New Zealand and (from 1996) overseas. The fulltime Advanced Diploma of Dance (Elite Performance) has a high proportion of graduate students gaining work professionally.

In addition to performances in the National Theatre and Williamstown Town Hall, the School makes a significant contribution to the community by performing throughout the year at schools, senior citizen’s homes and public events. This is a valuable part of their training and is at the same time of enormous value to the students and inhabitants of the institutions visited. Regional tours have included Frankston, Geelong, Wonthaggi, Warrnambool Children’s’ Festival (2003 -2007), Knox City (2002) and a featured performance at the 2001 and 2005 Castlemaine Festivals.

The success of the School in training students to a professional standard has its basis in the skills and dedication of the School Director and teaching staff, who have themselves had successful careers in dance and are able to instill their own dedication and professionalism into their students
